Ovarian Cancer BRCA Know the risk

Hi friends,

About a year ago my cousin Maureen passed away from ovarian cancer, and our family has taken on the mission of spreading awareness of BRCA, a genetic mutation that is closely linked to ovarian cancer. They now have a simple blood test which can let people know if they have the BRCA gene (which increases your chance of ovarian cancer by 50%), but not many people - including my cousin - even knew/know that such a test exists. Ovarian cancer is called a "silent killer" because of the lack of symptoms. When Maureen was diagnosed, she was already at stage 3. If she had had the test done, she would have been able to prevent the cancer from even having a chance to harm her.
Maureen's husband Mike and his oldest son, Joe recently completed this incredibly powerful video which you can now find on YouTube, and Joe told their story at the National Ovarian Cancer Conference this week in Washington DC. I encourage you to watch it and please spread the word to all the women in your lives. We can't have Maureen back, but by spreading the word and educating people we may be able to help other families avoid such senseless tragedy.
The photos below were taken in Phoenix in January of 2009, 5 months before Maureen passed away. She is photographed with her first grandson, Aiden. I love you Casey family!

These three beautiful children belong to one of my most favorite people, Jeanie! She is such a beautiful person, my style guru, and someone I absolutely try to emulate.

I have known Jeanie over the last few years and her husband is now our dentist. I highly recommend Lake Baldwin Dental! They are GREAT with kids and even whiny adults like me. :)
We had such a good time with this shoot! The kiddos were troopers since we had to change our location after finding out that the park I wanted to shoot in charges annual fees for photographers. So we hopped in our cars and found this bridge at Mead Gardens. Good thing I brought my bug spray! :)

Ministry of Mothers Sharing (MOMS) has started again at my parish, St. Margaret Mary here in Winter Park. I am so happy that I am facilitating with two of my wonderful friends, Kelly and Kim. I know we will have a wonderful time together during this 8 week process.
Last night we were sharing in our group a bit about how God's grace helps us through life, and I told the story about our beautiful Maureen. I sobbed, of course. Like that uncontrollable, helpless, blubbering type of sob.
Anyway, I was telling these special women about how God intervened in my life in January of 2009 and sent me to Phoenix. It was time for the annual Imaging USA convention for Professional Photographers of America and for the first time, I decided to go. God sent me photograph my cousin Maureen who was battling ovarian cancer. She fought for a very long time, but God welcomed her into his arms in June of 2009.
She is photographed here with her first grandson, Aiden.

She has battled synovial sarcoma, a cancer that was in her back, and many have rallied around her. She is a beautiful, magnificent, shining star to all of us!

I was happy to be asked to shoot some of Nathan's family while we were in Iowa over Christmas and New Year's. We shot at their house in their kitchen. We had to move the kitchen table back a ways so I could have a bit of room to take advantage of the window light streaming in. There was about 3 feet of snow on their deck providing wonderful key light!! :)

Trippi is one of my nearest and dearest friends, as they say, one of my "besties". We have been friends since 1st grade!
We finally got to plan a shoot for her family, so my family and I went for a trip down to Lakeland. On the way there, I got a text from Trippi saying that her morning had been horrible. Uh oh. I turned to Nathan while we were driving and said, "Madey probably cut her hair... or Tobyn's."
Well, turns out I was right after all... Madey decided Tobyn needed a new "do" for the photos. THEN, Madey decided to accidentally spill Papa John's garlic sauce on her dress that Trippi wanted them to wear for photos. Nice! :)
We made it work, and the photos turned out beautifully. We shot out on their back porch and it was blazing hot. Sigh. I love Florida. It's all worth it!

I love this family, and I can't believe how much these kids have grown since our last shoot (October of 2007). Some of my most favorite images EVER were from their first session and are still holding strong in my portfolio.
Our previous shoot was at their house also, so this time I knew what I was getting into (most beautiful window light)! They were so funny, spunky, and adorable! I especially love the dinosaur poses by Nathan, the T-Rex is hysterical! What a character. :)

A few months ago, my cousin, Jeanne, asked me to shoot her daughter's senior photos. I was in South Dakota a few weeks ago over the 4th of July for a family reunion, so we shot around Sioux Falls. We had so much fun! I usually don't shoot seniors, however, after this experience, I think I need to start booking! :)

I can't tell you much how I adore this woman and her family. I got the most stunning pregnancy photos of her, but they are private so I can't share them. She is such a great friend, and I am honored to be able to photograph her family. I can't wait to see the lil' one grow up with his big brother, who is so totally cute I have a hard time leaving him. ;)
We started our session with the older son so I could "practice". I've learned this is an excellent way to get the older siblings to participate. I tell them I need their help to practice, and they are usually very cooperative. I am thrilled with the infant shots that we got, and I'd like to thank the S family for their patience with me, as newborn shoots generally last longer than usual. Hee hee.

The F Family Visits Florida

Kelly is one of my greatest friends from college. I met her through our sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma at Iowa State. We have had a lot of wonderful times together, but this memory tops my list so far. I haven't seen Kelly since their oldest daughter was um... about one? Since then they have had twin girls who are now almost 4! So seeing her and her family here in Florida on their Disney vacation was SO much fun. We had a lot of laughs at ourselves as Moms and and traded a lot of motherhood stories. It's definitely a time with Kelly that I will hold dear to my heart. Check out this awesome family!!!

My cousin, Maureen, has been diagnosed with Ovarian cancer. She is young, beautiful, positive, and now a Grandma! She is a very strong person for dealing with what she has been through, and every day I pray for her recovery.
Katie and Aiden are adorable. I got to spend some time with them while I was in Phoenix for a photography convention. Katie and I got to chat a ton, and we had so much fun together. Aiden is a doll, you guys have a beautiful family Joe and Katie! Next time, Joe, you'll be in them!

Sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures. Mrs. G called me in the middle of tropical storm Fay, asking if I had any time to photograph them with their grandson while they were in town for the next few days. Thankfully I was able to throw together my studio (in the middle of my house!) in about an hour. I don't usually use lights, I utilize natural light at a park or at someone's house, but since it was POURING RAIN outside, I cranked out the good ol' Travelites!
This family is extraordinary, so fun and loving, and so proud to be a family. The grandson had fun meeting my daughter, who is only 17 months, but looked huge compared to this 3 month old little boy!

Finn Gunderson Benefit

Finn, a sweet little 10 month old boy, has something called Diamond-Blackfan Anemia. He can't make his own red blood cells, and will have to undergo blood transfusions and steroids for the rest of his life. If that starts to fail, he'll need a bone marrow transplant. This disease affects 700 people in the WORLD. I can't imagine what his parents, Bridget and Matt must be going through. I have been blessed with two healthy kids, and I'm not sure how I'd cope with a situation such as what they have been dealt.
I have had the opportunity to reach out to them and share my talents, and for this I feel blessed. I photographed Finn on Wednesday at the Bryson's house, and was able to capture some great shots of the little guy (www.mmphoto.net/gunderson). Last night in downtown Orlando, there was a benefit for Finn. There was a silent auction at Finnhenry's and then a benefit concert featuring Steve Foxbury at The Social.
The auction was great, I got to enjoy myself as well as work. I got to see some of my friends that I have literally not seen since High School! How great to be reunited with some great people.
There were 100+ more entries for the silent auction donated from the community. My husband and I are proud new owners of a case of Red Bull and cherry vodka, a car detailing package (which I insist should be spend on the VAN), and I got a hair cut and color at Alchemy (my friendly neighborhood alternative salon). Wooohoooo! I said NO to the kegerator. No, no, no. ;)
I also contributed to the auction with a fine art metallic print that was framed by Let Us Frame It (College Park), and a photo session and print. I'm very excited to see who bought my stuff, thanks!
I took photos of the auction and of the concert and will be selling them through a link on my website. Should be pretty fun. All the proceeds will go to Finn, so buy some! I will also be putting a book together of all of the photographs of the evening to sell for Finn also. I know I got some great shots of people at the auction, but the concert, eh, not so much good stuff I don't think. We shall see!
I feel honored and blessed to be able to take part in an event to help such a precious boy. Good luck to you guys, lets make this an annual thing!

The mom of this beautiful group has been a friend of mine since grade school! We have always had so much fun together, ever since we were... um, 12? Something like that.
It has been so much fun to see her pregnant with both of these girls and get to see how beautiful they are! They are such a fun and loving family. We had a bit of a tough time getting Little Miss Independence to sit still, but I LOVE the way the family shot turned out! So gorgeous!

There is nothing like seeing your best friend's child (Cindy and I have literally been friends since we were babies). Nor is there anything like having the opportunity to photograph them and see them truly laughing their heads off at their daddy. I captured these pictures of my friend Cindy's son, who was laughing so hard he was bouncing! Daddy was standing behind me with a stuffed dolphin that squeaks, saying "I'm gonna eat the camera! Mmmm...mmmm...mmm!"

This was a huge project... 16 people! We shot for an hour and a half... and had laughs the whole time. They were hysterical! For my first blog, I'm going to be posting some of the adorable shots I got of Kaitlyn at 6 months. I've been wanting to get out my camera for a while now, and I've finally done it. I've finally taken that first step, and now that I have, I'm going NUTS. I can't get enough.

In one week I decided to finally do what I've been wanting to do do for two years... start my business! I'm determined now, now that I think I'm done having kids, to do this. I want my images out there, I want people to see what I can create with my camera. I want parents to explode with delight when they see the images that I have taken of their children. I want to be able to capture the essence of these children in a photograph, the way that no one else can. So here we go, here is my entrance to this business... and first to appear is my daughter Kaitlyn!

This picture is one of my favorites ever. This is my friend Trippi, that I have known since we were in first grade. We've always been friends, and have had the pleasure of sharing life's best adventures with each other... especially having kids. Here she is pregnant with her second baby girl, Tobyn. I'm amazed every time I see this picture that someone can stay so thin being pregnant! Ha.
